Gypsy World & Hobo Cabaret

Last night I went out with two of my fellow Maker-Girlfriends. We went to a band called Beats Antique. I had never heard of them but was game to go out with two good friends. Being a creator and designer, the evening was visually stimulating for me in so many ways.

The best piece of Beats Antique was the dancer Zoe Jake. She oozes sexiness. She is gorgeous, and is a belly dancer. Well, I am no belly dancing expert and really have not seem much, but her performance was fabulous. Her costumes were very cool. My favorite was a leather, antler headdress she wore. She travels with another group called the Yard Dogs Road Show. I hadn't heard of them, but their web site describes them as a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll and based on these images below the show looks wonderful. I am going have to go see them as well.

Sterling & Bakelite Hairsticks

I discovered this fabulous sterling silver hairstick the other day at Solo. I had to bring it home as inspiration. Being a gal with long hair I often stick things in my hair to put it up. I was surprised that this hair stick was so short. and had a flattened section. But I am going to try it. I think I may create some sterling hair sticks that are inspired by all of these.

A few years ago I came across this book that featured these amazing bakelite hairsticks from Asia. I am completely enamored with them. Of course the Asian mum is my favorite. Do you use hair sticks. What is your favorite length?

Plants plants and more plants

Awhile back I was at a local yard sale and I picked up a book called Hawai'i A Floral Paradise by Leland Miyano.

When I started flipping through the book I knew instantly I had to buy it. It instantly took me back to Hawaii. Which coincidentally when we first saw our house and the tropical plants all over in the back yard reminded me of Hawaii and I was hooked and wanted it too. Hawaii has a warm spot in my soul.

Tuesday, I got a tip that Cedros Gardens in Solana Beach has Leucospermum or Pincushion protea which my book describes as looking like red sea urchins, which is dead on. When I got to CG I was delighted to find the plant below. Well I am going to have to save up to buy it. The good size plant was $149.00.

These are native to South Africa and Australia.

And also this Grevellea Banksii

Grevellea Banksii, is also called the Kahili Flower. I have another favorite Kahili flower which is Kahili Ginger. It is rampant in my yards. I came home with Grevillea, which I am told hummingbirds love, so the ones that frequent my yard will be happy. This exotic flower also had a smaller price tag of only $15.00. Well, I will be saving up for my Protea. And I also want a Purple Passion Flower vine like this. But I may opt for the edible variety, I just love Lilikoi juice.

Molds on display at Solo

Yesterday I took a quick trip to Solana Beach to the Cedros Gardens to scope out some plants. Well I cannot go within walking distance of my favorite store Solo, across the street with out popping in.

There were a few items that really caught my eye.

These are real halves of an actual mold used at one time for making resin glasses. I am personally fascinated with eyewear. I have a small collection of vintage glasses that I treasure. And some day I hope to make eyeglass frames. For me this was a little peak into how frames are made. Which after seeing these looks extremely similar to some of the processes we already do for our jewelry making. If the other halves were there I wouldn't have been able to resist buying them. But now I am a step closer to making eyewear.

Another very cool item on display and for sale at Solo were these Pewter casting molds. I just visited a pewter caster last week and saw some molds similar to these. You can tell they are for pewter by the hole in the center. I love the way Jennifer Price has displayed these. Absolutely stunning.

Happy Valentine's Day. We have been busy baking over here. Ginger and I cooked up some fabulous funfetti heart shaped cupcakes for her class. Her favorite parts are licking the beater and sprinkling the sprinkles.
My favorite part is taking the photos along the way.

If you know me, you know I live and breath signage. I even design it in my sleep. It is something that I am truly drawn to and enjoy. Being of a lover of signage, I also can't get enough of great architectural graphics and I love when the are integrated in residential homes and and not just retail properties. I came across these plates and dishes and couldn't help stopping to enjoy. I just love the big flower plates and bowls. The little bird dishes are fun too. Many of girlfriends are into peacocks and this design has those as well. You would think these dishes were at Anthro, but no they are at Macy's. I just love the soft aqua hues.

Cool New Store in LA - H.D. Buttercup

Found this beautiful new store in Los Angeles, in a Interior Design html newsletter. The fabulous room colors caught my eye. Awhile back I blogged these cool filigree light fixtures. A local company in North San Diego County called Hi Octane Design can create large wall graphics like those flower graphics shown in photo two. The store is H.D. Buttercup. They are located 3225 Helms Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90034. Well I am ready for an LA trip to go explore some new places. Anyone want to make a day trip?

The proper way to coax ketchup out of a bottle and why Plastic Planet the movie needs to go viral

I remember years ago when I was in High School and my parents came back from a trip to Sweden and Denmark. They said to me "Make a conscious effort to stop buying plastic. We watched a documentary while we were in Sweden about how bad plastic is and that it is thought to effect hormones in people and all sorts of things." Being in high school my reaction to this was ok and I made sure to buy soda in a can, we could even still get it in a bottle in Nevada then. And when presented the choice I always choose glass.

As I grew older and noticed that everything went from glass packaging to plastic. Remember glass bottles of Heinz ketchup? Syrup used to come in a glass bottle, so did vinegar, milk and juice. And now while our grocery bags maybe lighter, we can't get away from plastic. We are no longer given the choice. Lately I have been really trying to rid myself of it.

A year of two ago, I went through my kitchen and threw away all my tupperware and plastic bowls. I kept a few things mostly disposable packaging like a Coolwhip dish. But I bought glass plates that can go in the microwave. I bought old vintage pyrex refrigeratorware so that I can store food in glass. We still have plastic plates that are used on occasion. but all my kids including the 5year old know that we never put plastic dishes in the microwave.

I fell into the ease of life and I buy kids snacks that come in portion size servings. Things like yogurt, gogurt and peaches etc. I do try to get a second use out of these plastic packages by cleaning them and saving them for a craft project I might need them for.

But I really want to encourage food companies to give us back the choice of packaging. I want ketchup in a glass jar, who cares if you can't squeeze it. Do you know how many stories my kids and I can come up with of the proper way to coax ketchup out of a bottle. Many many, like tilt the bottle and tap the label (where it reads Heinz) with your butter knife. Or tilt the bottle down and hit the bottom of the bottle with the palm of your hand. I am sure you have a method of your own even too.

Bring back the bulk food aisles. Give me choices to buy yogurt in bulk. Give me my cheese not in plastic. Let me have cartons.

Which brings me to this movie. Plastic Planet. I really want to see it. My husband Brad came across a trailer for it online and knew I would love it. I wrote an email to the movie director Werner Boote and he actually responded. So let's watch this movie and let's figure out to rid our selves and choosing plastic constantly.

My top 3 business book reading choices for 2011

So this year I started off my month of January with a few new reads that I feel will be inspirational and motivating.

The book that arrived first is Tribes by Seth Godin. I have a read a few a Seth's books. I also subscribe to his blog, and read his posts daily in my email inbox. I really enjoy Seth's writing. Simple stories that convey his ideas and his ability to think alternatively. So far I am about half way through this read and enjoying it.

Second on my list is The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs, insanely different principles for breakthrough success by Carmine Gallo. I love Apple innovation so this book should be great. I am think I am going to read this second.

Lastly another Seth Godin book titled Linchpin.

2011 Creative Reading List - The fun half

Happy New Year. I am so excited about 2011. I am really looking forward to all sorts of wonderful new things. Including trying new things. Here is the fun half of my 2011 reading list.

I want to do more homesteading around our place. We have the room and I would love to be off the grid and self sufficient and some point in my life. This will be a good start.

Holiday Dessert | Praline Pumpkin Cake

Praline Pumpkin Cake

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup whipping cream
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup (from 15-oz can) pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon Allspice
1/2 teaspoon Cardamon
1 container (1 lb) Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy cream cheese frosting
Caramel topping
Additional coarsely chopped pecans, if desired

1. Heat oven to 325°F. In 1-quart heavy saucepan, stir together butter,
whipping cream and brown sugar. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally,
just until butter is melted. Pour into 2 (9- or 8-inch) round cake pans;
sprinkle evenly with 3/4 cup pecans.
2. In large bowl, beat cake mix, pumpkin, milk, oil, eggs and 1 teaspoon of
the pumpkin pie spice with electric mixer on low speed until moistened.
Beat 2 minutes on medium speed. Carefully spoon batter over pecan
mixture in each pan.
3. Bake 43 to 45 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly
in center. Cool 5 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool
completely, about 1 hour.
4. Stir remaining 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice into frosting. To assemble
cake, place 1 layer, praline side up, on serving plate. Spread with half of
the frosting. Top with second layer, praline side up; spread remaining
frosting to edge of layer. Drizzle with caramel topping and additional
pecans. Store loosely covered in refrigerator.

Beach Wedding Inspiration | Alchemy Events

I recently had the pleasure of joining Vanessa from Alchemy Fine Events on location for a photo shoot she was doing. I assisted in the creation of a few things for the shoot including name place tags and weathered wood menu boards.

I had such a wonderful time setting up the pieces on the beach. Shooting on location is not without it's challenges of heat, sand, wind and finding level ground. But we weathered the challenges, enjoyed the beautiful view and made a wonderful day of it.

Modern Antler Chandeliers A Lighting Trend

Since living in Colorado, I acquired a taste for Antlers. I use to love the simple discovery of finding a shed deer or elk antler on a hike. I still have a few that I just place around my house to remind me of the Colorado outdoors. And how can one resist these fabulous antler chandeliers. The first two are made my long time friends, Niki and Jared Davis of North Rim Glass. The ceramic versions are for sale by Design within Reach. Both are wonderful and would look great in a modern home or an Aspen Lodge. Oh Deer! I can't decide.

The new W Hotel in Atlanta has an amazing look. The space is designed by Toronto based Burdifilek. They use amazing materials such as solid walnut walls and bent wood screens. The space has a feel of an underwater experience. And has a 22 ft water feature with ambient trickling of water. The overhead mobiles have kinetic movement. I love the metal art grates in the rooms.

I was reading the Interior Design Blog and came across a new post about Portland's Vanillawood. I love how the name invokes a smell. I love the concept they are doing of being a one stop design studio with a focus on bringing eco design style to people. We have a store in Orange County that has some similarities to this concept called The Road Less Traveled. I can appreciate the modern style of Vanillawood. They definitely have a good eye. Vanillawood offers a design-friendly inventory of fabrics, wallpaper, lighting, mirrors, rugs, and objects for sale. While there, visitors can also check out their custom upholstery, furniture, and built-in cabinetry offerings in which the couple specializes.

Affordable Dream Houses | by Asul

So I was perusing the Dwell on Design 2010 site and came across the site Asul. Intrigued with the name I ventured in to see what Asul was all about. How delighted I was to find these really cool home structures. Asul is an inventive home and construction system developed by a team of Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Investors.

What I like about the homes are, they have a very modern look and they work on ANY lot. The key here is that the Asul team have developed a "system" that is adaptable to many requirements and scenarios.

The process is started by assessing your lot and housing needs and designing your house to work with your lot. Then the foundations start, which use caisson footings. So the home is elevated off the ground then the steel structure is brought into place. The steel structure is craned into place. The beauty of the steel structure, is that it absorbs the entire structural load of the home. Ao structural walls are unnecessary which gives you tons of design latitude within the structure. I also love how they integrated the joist hangers right into the steel i-beams. And since their are no exterior shear walls windows and doors can be added anywhere. So, I have an email into them about integrating my favorite modern glass garage doors. I think it has to be do-able.

Asul has 3 build options, You build which is around an amazing $25 a square foot. Option 2 is You and Asul build which is about $50 a square foot and Option 3 is Asul builds and this option is still an amazing $100 a square foot.

Now I just need to sell my house and find that dream lot...

My Dream House | Alicia Hanson

Well some of you will find it to be no surprise that my dream house resembles a garage. Barton Myers is an amazing architect in Los Angeles. His firm designs projects from residences to large urban developments. My favorite house is his own house that was a working experiment to address his taste and the environment where the residence is located, specifically fire danger. The home is located in Toro Canyon, Montecito California. The house is comprised of 4 pavillons. To preserve against wild fire danger the pavillon roofs are comprised of recirculation pools that double as reflecting pools at this terrace home. The home also has steel roll up doors that enable to house to be completely shut if a fire does come through.

He has since built another smiliar house in Santa Barbara. I want to build something similar someday with large roll up glass garage doors.

Shed-a-licious

I want to build another shed-outbuilding on our lot. We have a lil metal tool shed that is taking up a fine cement slab that would certainly love one of these buildings on it. The top shed is certainly my favorite. I can't get enough of garage doors. In fact, my favorite house is pretty much entirely garage doors. I will have to blog about that next.

I have a thing for corrugated metal, not sure if it is because it is shiny and silver or what, but I am drawn to it like a moth to light. My front counter in my old sign shop had it. The bottom shed is from the site Reclaimed Space. They will be at this years Dwell on Design Show in LA June 25-27. Check it out. Did you see the cool outdoor furniture in the las picture. Love it...

I was perusing Etsy today and came across this cool headpiece. The artist said that she was inspired while reading Mark Ryden's Tree book. Since we are on the subject of deer. I thought I would show of one of my new necklaces. I am calling it the Deer Antler Huntress Necklace. I incorporated the antler into the chain, so the antler runs up around your neck. It is available at my Etsy store here.

This past weekend we participated in Acre Las Vegas. The show traffic was slower than we had anticipated. But, gave us a wonderful opportunity to meet many of our fellow artists. One artist that was our aisle neighbor was Axelhoney. Axelhoney is created by Santa Monica artist Melissa Contreras. Melissa is an illustrator and jewelry designer. Well I love the concept of this. The Cleavage Caddy. I often try to roll purseless, and this would sure make things easier. I would love to know if this is comfortable or not too.

It also seems like you have to be wearing the right cleavage showing top, so that you have access to your items. A button up shirt might make it hard. You can buy this handy item here.

Macadamia Nut Encrusted Mahi Mahi My Favorite Dish Right Now

Macadamia Nut Encrusted Mahi Mahi.

Take 2 TBLSP Butter and melt in microwavable dish.

Beat 1 egg into melted butter.

Add salt n pepper to taste.

Dip Fish in butter-egg mixture.

Then roll fish in Panko bread crumbs.

Sauté fish in light butter until lightly browned.

In a new pan add healthy amount of whole butter, unsalted, with handful of chopped macadamia nuts.

Sauté on low heat until nuts are browned.

Take a banana and slice in long sticks, add to butter and macadamia nuts.

Bring up heat and deglaze with Frangelico, amaretto or any hazel nut liquor.

Let sauce reduce, until thickened.

Parsley for color, then place bananas crossed over halibut.

Pour sauce over and enjoy!

I like to serve with mashed potatoes or jasmine rice.

Swiss Army Airstream

I was reading one of my trade email newsletters and came across this posting of this new Airstream that Victorinox teamed up with Airtstream to create. Victorinox, felt that the 19' airstream really embodied the Swiss Army brand and was a natural fit. The Airstream is traveling around North America for the 6-9 months.

I love how they retrofitted the Airstream with an in and out door, making for better people flow. I also love the red, dark gray and stainless color palette. However, I think they could of done a cooler job on the exterior of the Airstream. They could have converted into a giant Swiss Army knife with a little red paint or some large format vehicle graphics. How cool would that be to go inside a giant pocket knife? Well look for the airstream at a place near you soon.

On Friday I discovered Urban Barn in Escondido. Have you been there?

I would describe it as Shabby Chic meets Junk Gypsy.
They have:
Home and garden decor,
Industrial and architectural finds
European furniture and linens
Vintage Chandeliers and handmade jewelry.

They are located 155 W. Crest Street, Escondido, CA 92025. Their hours are Wed - Sat 10am - 5pm. The designs have a modern kitsch collage feel, that I just can't get enough of these days. They are a Dutch company who have lots of wonderful orginal designs. A couple cool garden lanai items. I saw these fabulous cushions and futons at Leaping Lotus in Solana Beach. I just the love the fabrics, they look Indian to me. One of the futons fold out to a bed size the other is a large bench size.

I also saw this cool snap together decking from Ikea. I am intrigued with the concept of snap together decking. I love the instant satisifaction of it. Not sure how long it will last at Ikea. But what a cool space you could create with the decking some lanterns and the cushions....

Antler Table Discovery

The other day I was visiting a couple of my local weekly haunts for thrift treasures. And I came across this interesting table. I love the antlers that were attached to the sides and the twig drawer handle. I could really see this piece being a rustic touch in a modern space that works amazingly well. Bee-autiful Birthday Theme

My crafty friend Leah created this great theme for her daughter's birthday. She created bee hive cupcakes using Trader Joe's vanilla cake mix and buttercream frosting. For the bees she used yellow and black M&M's and almond slivers for the winds. The cupcakes were very delicious.

Leah also created goody bags from yellow gingham printed vintage wallpaper that she upcycled. She created bags by sewing the bags on her sewing machine. She then folded over the bags and punched holes in the top. Finishing the bags with a cute ribbon bow. She also created matching pinwheels from scrapbook paper.

Leah has a great recycled card company called Peez and Ques. Where she makes greeting cards from recycled mail and paper. Leah is one of the founding members of the Oceanside Craft Mafia.

Murphy Beds

I want to build a murphy bed setup in my sons room. I love the idea of a murphy bed, that they can be put away for more space and that the mattress does not fold. I have been looking at different option of beds that are available. So far I have found a piston hinge system that is available from Rockler woodworking and hardware. I have also found a company called Murphy Bed Hardware. They offer bed packages and a DIY hinge system. Their hinge claims to be superior over the piston setup, which seems to make sense. They also offer install videos.

Murphy beds seems to come with a variety of options. Vertical mounting or horizontal mount. Basically which axis the bed pivots on. Vertically is what I would say is traditional. The bed pivots where you head board would b,e and long end of the bed comes down to make the bed.

For horizontal mounting the bed pivots off the wall from the side of the bed. This method seems to allow for a two bed configuration. So if you wanted to have a bunk bed configuration. This would work well.

Skate-able Street Furniture

I was perusing a trend email I get and saw this article on a Industrial Design web site about furniture that is built to be skateboarded on. Jurjen Semeijn, designed these pieces for Dutch Design Week 2009. Well this rang a bell in my world. My son Nolan had a ramp in his living room for awhile and we have big half pipe in our backyard. Skateable furniture would definitely fit in my world. I think some pieces like these would be great at local parks or street scapes here in SoCal. This concepts embraces that skaters are going to skate it instead of putting skate stoppers all over things, make it Skate-able street art. I love the concrete sofa above, hope we see more of this.

Sakura Blossom Spring Corsage and Jewelry

Today one of my new Sakura jewelry pieces was featured in a fellow Etsy jewelry artist's treasury. My design is the bottom piece.
Cerihart is a jewelry maker in Victoria BC. She creates beautiful asian inspired jewelry. Which I am sure you know has a soft spot in my heart. You can check out her etsy store here Cerihart. Her beautiful pendant is a plum blossom and she pierces and cuts her designs into the silver.

The top two items here are created by a Seattle Designer Emikokellerdesigns. She has some wonderful designs. I love the pink felt corsage. She said she learned the technique in Japan. On her other piece with the red blossoms she uses leather and metal beads to create the cool shaped flowers.

So the other day after watching a TED video about how Jaimie Oliver won the TED prize and has a goal to Teach every child about food. I was moved to go to Henry's Market with my kids in tow and make sure they know the names of almost all the vegetables there. We picked out a few vegetables that we hadn't tried before or didn't eat regularly and decided to buy them and try them that night. Here is what we concocted. The great news is my kids loved it.

Roasted Beets, leeks, fennel, shallots, parsnips

Fresh Beets
Fresh Parsnips
Leek - half stock
Fennel - half bulb
Shallot or onion
1 TBLSP Balsamic Vinegar
2 TBLSP Olive oil
1 TBLSP Butter
1 TBLSP Crushed Garlic

Assemble:
Fresh Beets – remove skin like a potato and cut in thin long round slices
Fresh Parsnips – remove skin like a potato and cut in thin long round slices
Leek – use half of the lower stock length wise, then thin slices like onion
Fennel – Use half of the bulb and cut in thin slices.
Shallot or onion just cut in to thin slices.
(Celery root works too)

Spray roasting dish with cooking spray.
Turn oven to 450
Put butter in pan
Put all veggies in roasting dish with lid.
Drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Add crushed garlic
Toss all veggies.
Roast covered for 40 mins at 450.
